No, the photo showing a large number of coffins is not a current photo of deceased COVID-19 infected people.
A photo of a large number of coffins is intended to reflect the current “Corona situation” in Italy
The photo is shared alongside a warning for people to stay at home.
The photo shows the victims of a boat accident off Lampedusa in 2013.
We are currently receiving many inquiries about the following photo, which is being shared on social media platforms such as Facebook:
The impression is that the dead in the coffins died from the current new coronavirus:
Maybe that's one reason everyone stays at home. This is what it looks like in Italy
And here's a current photo from Bergamo Italy, for all the stupid Corona party guests! If you want your party to end like this, just carry on, you complete honks.Or you can take responsibility and stay home with your ass. Apparently you don't understand it any other way!!!
The fact check
No. These people did not die from the new coronavirus. The photo isn't even from 2020. The photo can be found in an Italian article from 2014 .
It shows the victims of one of the largest boat accidents off the Mediterranean island of Lampedusa. On October 3, 2013, over 350 people who had fled Africa died after a ship fire. Only around 150 people survived the accident.

But even if the photo does not belong to the current situation, the Robert Koch Institute actually warns against so-called “corona parties”, which take place despite the warning against organizing large celebrations with potential gatherings of people because the clubs are closed.
As with influenza and other acute respiratory infections, people become infected via droplets or smear infections . That's why it's so important to keep your distance from those who are sick (approx. 1 to 2 meters). In the case of droplet infection, pathogens that settle in the throat or respiratory tract are released into the air through tiny droplets of saliva when sneezing, coughing or speaking and are then inhaled by another person or absorbed directly through the mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract Example of a kiss.
Conclusion:
The photo does not belong to the current situation in Italy. It shows the coffins of the victims who died in the boat accident off Lampedusa in 2013.
Nevertheless, in the current pandemic situation, it is a good idea to avoid large gatherings of people if possible.
