The following foods are poisonous for dogs!

Avocados

Avocados contain a substance called persin; this polyketide can actually cause heart damage in mammals (except dogs and cats), as well as breast inflammation (mastitis), in which no germ is involved (sterile). There are only two cases in the world to date where there is a suspicion that dogs may have suffered heart damage.

In dogs and cats, the gastrointestinal tract is damaged and diarrhea occurs. In dogs, pancreatitis can also occur, although the high fat content of the avocado is probably to blame. written in the report, the large cores can cause intestinal obstruction, which can also be fatal.

Onions and garlic

Garlic in particular is very toxic for dogs because its active ingredients, the so-called alliins (sulphur-containing non-proteinogenic amino acids, hence the strong smell), damage the gastrointestinal tract on the one hand, which can lead to diarrhea and vomiting, and on the other hand it can damage the red Blood cells lead to a so-called hemolytic anemia. In other words: the red blood cells burst.

The alliins are NOT destroyed by heating, cooking or drying, which particularly affects dried onion and garlic products, which can often contain many times more alliins per gram than the fresh product. Therefore, poisoning with garlic or onion powder is unfortunately not uncommon in veterinary practice. ( source )

Chocolate, cocoa, coffee and tea

The toxin in the cocoa bean is theobromine, which is so healthy for humans. Caffeine in coffee and tea. Unfortunately, the plants (coffee and cocoa) are not only related, but also reinforce each other's toxic effects.
The highest toxic potential is a theobromine-caffeine ratio of 5:1 (Johnston, 2005).
When it comes to cocoa, the darker the chocolate, the more toxic it is to the animal. Anyone who thinks that it can't be that dangerous should know that in 2018 I had two deaths from chocolate poisoning in my own practice, because with small breeds of dogs, just one or two pieces of dark chocolate or a spoonful of cocoa powder can be enough to... to cause deaths. You can therefore also find very practical chocolate calculators online where you can calculate the toxic dose for your own dog.

alcohol

Alcohol does not belong in our pets as they cannot break down alcohol well.
This is why alcohol poisoning occurs much earlier in dogs and cats than in humans, which can lead to nausea, vomiting, impaired consciousness and convulsions and even death, and with much lower doses than are required in humans.
Therefore, giving animals alcohol is not a funny thing, but clearly a case of animal cruelty. Cortinovis C & Caloni F. (2016) Household Food Items Toxic to Dogs and Cats. Front Vet Sci. 3(26)

Xylitol

Xylitol, also known as birch sugar, is a sugar alcohol that, like theobromide, is healthy for humans but deadly for dogs. Even small amounts (0.1 mg per kg dog) can lead to a dangerous drop in blood sugar levels. Immediate detoxification is recommended from 0.5 mg/kg. In addition, xylitol is highly toxic to the liver and even amounts of less than 0.5 mg/kg can cause acute liver failure. This often ends fatally.

After taking toxic doses of xylitol, dogs may become apathetic and weak, have seizures, tremble, vomit, and often have a racing heart. Jaundice can also occur even if the symptoms mentioned above have not occurred. Just three weeks ago, I lost a dog in my practice to xylitol poisoning after he ate a large amount of sugar-free chewing gum. The danger of sugar-free sweets is higher today than ever before, especially since most people don't know about the toxicity of xylitol.

milk

Of course, milk is not traditionally toxic to dogs, but since dogs are naturally lactose intolerant, drinking milk and dairy products can lead to flatulence, diarrhea and vomiting. Therefore, you should avoid dairy products that contain lactose if possible.

NOTE: Not only these foods are toxic to our pets, but many more (grapes, raisins, raw potatoes, etc.). Therefore, always be well informed about what you give your dog to eat and remain critical!
