Job advertisements with different salary information: Women are offered lower salaries. But these job advertisements are not real!

October 21st, 2019 was the so-called “Equal Pay Day 2019”. According to the Austrian Chamber of Labor, this means that on this day, on average, men have already earned as much as women have earned in the entire year. To draw attention to this, two job advertisements appeared that day.

The Chamber of Labor also states that, statistically speaking, women in Austria will earn an average of around 10,000 euros per year this year (based on full-time employment). However, there is a small improvement: In contrast to 2018, “Equal Pay Day 2019” has been moved back by one day.

Would you accept this offer?

A marketing agency published a job advertisement on social media. We are looking for a marketing manager, which is piquant at this point: regardless of age and qualifications, a different salary is offered depending on gender.

Men get €3,000 and women get €2,700. But it's not just a job as a marketing manager that the " Gnutlah & Partner Agency " wants to offer under unequal conditions.

There are also job advertisements for accountants, graphic designers or managing directors. They all have one catch: the agency only provides placements at unequal salaries.

Background of the job advertisements

And the different salaries are actually intentional. If you look closely and see the small details, you will notice the meaning of the advertisements. The logo and name of the agency alone convey a message (Gnutlah = attitude, the company logo is an unequal symbol).

Of course, these jobs are not advertised, but rather they are intended to show how unequally men and women are paid. The numbers from the individual job advertisements are based on a calculation model from the Agenda Austria Mind the Gap The publication states:

The “Gender Pay Gap” is not a myth, but many popular arguments rely on incorrect numbers. In this study, Agenda Austria comes to the conclusion that the gender pay gap is not around 22 percent, but between 3.5 and 11.2 percent (depending on the income class).

Agenda Austria is an independent think tank that can certainly be viewed as economically liberal. The figures adjusted in the publication should not be seen as over-dramatized results, but rather as moderate information.

“Gender Pay Gap”

The “Equal is equal” campaign, which is behind the supposed agency Gnutlah & Partner, is now based on these results. That's no secret, because if you click on one of these fake job advertisements, you end up on the campaign website . Here you can read:

Women in Austria earn between 3.4% and 11.2% less
than men.
This difference cannot be explained by part-time models, maternity leave or similar and is therefore arbitrary.

This is where the fake job advertisements come in. Because if they had actually been switched like that, they would be illegal. Nevertheless, as the publication “Mind the Gap” described, there is a mathematical difference, especially in jobs with higher qualification requirements.

The advertisements are intended to illustrate the difference in earnings between the genders. We spoke to Thomas Meyer from the Toman+Meyer GmbH agency, which is responsible for the “Equal is equal” campaign:

“The aim of the campaign is to attract attention. Attention to a topic that is too often too complex and not presented clearly enough,” says Meyer. However, raising awareness is only the first step; the goal should be to solve the problem: “There are injustices that could easily be solved. We have to take this on as a civil society – because no one else will.”
