Not new and still unpleasant – this status post

The 2018 World Cup is starting soon, so this photo collage from 2016 in various status posts on Facebook. And we get inquiries about the background of this slogan.

Some history-savvy spectators asked themselves this question when they saw national coach Joachim Löw in 2016 wearing a T-shirt with the print “We for you, you for us”. We also reported on it at the time: Federal Jogi with propaganda from the Third Reich? Now let's take a moment...

At least both pictures are not fake. One could claim that this is image manipulation, but that is not the case. The picture of Löw came from the official DFB website . The other picture is actually a Wehrmacht poster from World War II. This can be found in the official Federal Archives (poster for the home front. Source: BArch MSg 142 / 65).

But how does such a motto find its way onto a T-shirt on the national coach's body? Is he a Nazi in disguise? Is he sending secret messages to the dark side of the moon?

The comparison between the two images is very far-fetched

At this point it makes no sense to accuse Löw of anything; he has never made a secret of his stance against right-wing sentiments; only recently took a clear position again. How the saying on his T-shirt should be evaluated can be seen quite clearly below.

We for you – you for us

This motto not only existed (in reverse order) on the Wehrmacht poster for the home front, but it has been the motto of various fan clubs and clubs for several years: HSV ( 1 ), Bayer04 ( 2 ), VfB Stuttgart ( 3 ), FCK ( 4 ), PHC Wittenberge ( 5 ), Dresden Ice Lions ( 6 ), Disabled Handicap Radio eV ( 7 ), Vamos! Kulturhalle ( 8 ), Schlossgarde – Engelskirchen ( 9 ), to name just a few (the order was chosen arbitrarily, does not represent a rating and the list is also incomplete, with not too much effort you can find other activities and sources). Even “Antifa” has used this slogan ( 10 ). Perhaps even the first people who copied the motto for their fan club had an association with the poster, but now it has (in a mirrored order) a semi-permanent existence in linguistic usage, especially in fan clubs, but also in many other areas of the world public life. In today's language it simply means giving and taking in alternation.

However, the saying also seems to be popular 11 This slogan of perseverance already existed in the First World War ( 13 ). With a different image motif also as a field postcard in 1940 ( 13 ).

Various songs of all stripes contain this slogan as a lyric; there was even an (indexed) album ( 14 ) by the German Oi! band Loikaemie with this title. For example, take a look at the Onkelz ( 15 ), Santiano ( 16 ) or Extressiv ( 17 ).

The Musketeers?

“We for you – you for us” sounds a little like “One for all, all for one,” the Musketeers’ motto. Interestingly, everyone knows without a doubt that this motto is attributed to Alexandre Dumas.

Since I'm not a football fan, I didn't know the fan motto that was chanted so often. That will be different with Jogi Löw.

Both are almost identical, but the propaganda machine of the Third Reich couldn't simply adapt Duma's motto because everyone should be addressed and not just one who is struggling on the "home front" while everyone else is doing their part on the other fronts . So it was formulated more personally and from “One for all” it was “We for you” and from “All for one” it was “You for us” - that's how it could have been, but it doesn't have to be, maybe they were just inspired without it in the back of their minds to spare a direct thought for the Musketeers, who knows.

Yes, it's a poster from an inglorious time in Germany, but you shouldn't hang everything so high, just keep the ball flat or simply not "sterilize it" as much, as a famous footballer already said.
