Now, according to her own statements, she has escaped from her house arrest: Because the state does not adhere to the law, she is not complying with the punitive measure, said Marina Ovsjannikova.
Journalist already known through TV protest
Already in mid-March MIMIKAMA reported on the former television editor after she suddenly jumped into the picture on the Russian main news channel PERWY KANAL. With a protest poster she expressed her criticism of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine with the words: “Stop the war. Don't believe the propaganda. They lie to you.” She also shouted the words: “No to war” several times.
Ovsjannikova was only seen with her poster for about 6 seconds, as the director reacted quickly and immediately switched to another image. Nevertheless, in this very short period of time, it gained worldwide attention, recognition and approval.
Ovsyannikova in court
After her high-profile protest on Russian state television against the war in Ukraine, the woman went to court and was sentenced to ten days' imprisonment or 30,000 rubles (226 euros). The punishment range is still quite low, because it was initially assumed that the editor would be convicted of defaming the Russian army under a new law. She would have faced up to 15 years in prison.
44-year-old escaped from house arrest
As the DPA and kurier.at explain, the journalist refuses to remain in house arrest. On Wednesday, October 5th, she wrote on Telegram:
“I consider myself completely innocent and since our state refuses to abide by its own laws, since September 30, 2022, I refuse to abide by the coercive measure imposed on me in the form of house arrest and I release myself from this.”
During her house arrest, the investigators, citing Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and his spokesman Igor Konashenkov, tried to pretend that not a single child had died in the war in Ukraine, Ovsyannikova now wrote.
“We all know that these two gentlemen were not at the front for a single day and have no idea about the number of civilian casualties.”
Manhunt – threatens a long prison sentence
Marina Ovsyannikova has been on a wanted list since October 3rd; She initially does not provide any information about her whereabouts. According to the Interfax agency, she is now facing a prison sentence of five to ten years for further violations of the law. Her arrest was originally ordered on August 11, 2022 until Sunday, October 9, 2022.
After her protest on Russian television, the employee, who had previously been considered loyal to the government, stayed abroad for a few months and worked briefly for the German newspaper “Die Welt” in July. In mid-July she protested again against the war within sight of the Kremlin. Her point of view also became clear again on Telegram when she published a video of herself wearing an ankle bracelet. Pointing to the latter, she said:
“Dear comrades of the penitentiary service, put such an ankle bracelet on President Putin. He is the one who should be kept away from society. He should be convicted of the genocide of the Ukrainian people and the mass murder of Russian men.”
