NRW Justice conducts first auction of Bitcoin assets confiscated from cybercriminals in Germany - sharp criticism of Facebook and Twitter

For the first time, the judiciary is auctioning assets confiscated from cybercriminals in the cryptocurrency Bitcoin. Bitcoins worth around 600,000 euros will soon be sold to the highest bidder via the NRW portal “justiz-auktion.de”, reported Markus Hartmann, head of the Central and Contact Center for Cybercrime in NRW (ZAC) to the “Kölner Stadt- Indicator".

The senior public prosecutor also made massive allegations against Facebook and Twitter. They are not helpful in finding the authors of hate posts online.

“The operators of the social networks then usually refer to their parent companies in Ireland or the USA, and our inquiries come to nothing there at the latest,” complains Hartmann.

Many radical users who would be banned from Facebook dock with the Russian counterpart vk.com.

“Things are even tougher there,” says Hartmann. “The operators don't even respond to our inquiries.” In this respect, the cybercrime expert is also critical of the legislative initiative by Federal Justice Minister Christine Lambrecht (SPD) on the subject.

Accordingly, in the future, Facebook & Co. will be required to independently report political agitators and provide their IP addresses. If this law comes into effect, the judiciary is expecting an enormous wave of proceedings.

Hartmann: “According to their own transparency reports, Facebook alone processes 160,000 deletions in Germany every quarter.” The question remains as to who should investigate all these cases with the police and public prosecutor’s office in the future.
