In the TikTok video, Karl Lauterbach talks about his career during a TEDx talk and also talks about how he got his professorship in Germany - which many people seem to misunderstand and think that he gave himself the title "Professor". only by deception and therefore not all that competent.
But many people don't seem to know how to get the title "Professor"!
The video
The video is 42 seconds long and can be found on TikTok HERE
At the beginning, a computer-generated voice asks: “ How did Karl Lauterbach become a professor?” “
Lauterbach then says in English:
“I had no competition. That's why I got the professorship. I advised the university to create this chair. I later applied for exactly this position. And believe it or not, I met all the requirements for this professorship exactly. It worked wonderfully, and I almost managed to do it here in Aachen as I had already convinced a few professors that this was the right path for my alma mater in Aachen.”
The origin of the video
The original video can be found on YouTube (see HERE ), the excerpt used in the TikTok video starts at minute 7:32.
The video is from 2014. Lauterbach speaks in a TEDx talk about his scientific and political career, which took him from high-tech medicine to medicine for the poorest of the poor. He discusses how social status and poverty can negatively impact the genetic makeup of the youngest members of society, leading to lifelong disadvantage and earlier death.
What Lauterbach said before is also important!
Lauterbach previously said that he had finished his studies in the USA and now had two options in Germany: to be an unemployed reader or to take up a professorship. He chose the latter and realized that there was not yet a single combined chair for the areas of knowledge he was studying: health epidemiology and health economics.
Since no one actually taught this sensible combination of areas of knowledge and was also a physicist, he suggested this chair - and then immediately applied for it.
Incidentally, the combination of several areas of knowledge to form a new chair is not Lauterbach's invention, but rather a methodology that was common in the USA at the time and was only introduced in Germany 15 years later, as the Deutsche Ärzteblatt reported in 1997 .
What is a Professor?
Based on the reactions and the word “sneaked,” many seem to be of the opinion that Lauterbach is not a “real” professor… but many don’t seem to know what a professor actually is.
So here it is in brief: Professor is an academic title, not an academic degree!
While a doctorate represents an academic degree for which you must have written a doctoral thesis, “professor” is an official or professional title . This title is associated with an employment relationship at a university or college, a so-called professorship, and expires when you leave the university or college.
Conclusion
Karl Lauterbach had previously advised the University of Cologne to set up an institute for health epidemiology and health economics. Since there was hardly anyone in Germany other than himself who had a doctorate in this field, he got the professorship when he applied for it and was commissioned to set up the institute.
And that is a much greater achievement than simply “just” taking up a professorship – he advised the university on how to set up the entire chair and then applied for that vacant professorship. To put it very simply, it is as if you combine two areas of knowledge and design and organize an entire curriculum for them. Then it's clear that you would be the best teacher for it, right?
