Security concerns are hindering the breakthrough of NFC technology in retail

Contactless payment with a smartphone at the checkout using NFC technology is out of the question for three out of five consumers in Germany.

Only a meager 18 percent shop often or at least sometimes in this way, while another eight percent rarely do so. This sobering result comes from a survey of 1,006 German citizens commissioned by the digital association BITKOM .

Germans are traditionally cautious

Despite the low acceptance among customers, the interest group believes that the technology will make a breakthrough:

“When it comes to money, customers in Germany are traditionally very cautious and rather conservative. However, we are currently experiencing how the financial and banking landscape is fundamentally changing. This will also change the way we pay in stores,”

said BITKOM President Achim Berg.

According to the study, many consumers cite safety concerns as the main reason for their reluctance. 61 percent fear hackers will access their account this way.

For 30 percent, paying with a cell phone is too complicated and for 13 percent, paying with a cell phone takes too long. Eight percent complain that cashiers are often unfamiliar with this payment method. Six percent say that paying with a smartphone is not possible in the stores they visit.
