What is ketogenic diet?
This diet consists mainly of fatty foods such as fish, cheese, nuts or avocados. Low-carbohydrate vegetables such as zucchini or cucumbers are also on the menu. On the other hand, fruit is rarely found in the keto diet because it has a very high fructose, or fructose, content.
Ketogenic diet
The so-called “ketogenic diet” is intended to help you lose weight. The rules: 80 to 85 percent fat, 10 to 15 percent protein and about 5 percent carbohydrates. For comparison: The nutritional association “Die Deutsche Gesellschaft” recommends 55 percent carbohydrates, 30 percent fat and around 15 percent protein for a balanced diet. Normally, the human body gets most of its energy from carbohydrates. It breaks down glucose, converts it and stores the glycogen obtained.
The problem is that if there is too much glucose, the sugar is converted into fat and deposited - fat deposits are created. With a ketogenic and therefore low-carbohydrate diet, the body adapts. It switches to the so-called ketosis metabolism. This means that it forms ketone bodies from fatty acids in order to obtain the necessary energy - the result: fat loss.
Be careful with previous illnesses
However, a ketogenic diet cannot be recommended for everyone. Doctors warn against such a diet if you have diabetes, kidney disease, especially chronic diseases and other diseases that can lead to weight loss.
