They are called Dall-E 2 or Craiyon , the most famous image generators that only need a few keywords or descriptions to generate AI images that are often bizarre, but sometimes surprisingly accurate. But like any artificial intelligence, they also have to be trained, and this with millions of photos - maybe even one of yours!

Interesting AI images

It's quite fun to generate AI images with the image generators, as even the craziest descriptions produce images. For example, here I created a rabbit riding a dinosaur Dall-E 2

Since my limited imagination is not enough, I asked my daughter for an idea:

And colleague Janine wanted a little Darth Vader-Yoda:

Now these images of Yoda and the elves are not created from nothing, but in this case real drawings are used as a basis, which are adapted accordingly by artificial intelligence based on the descriptions. And that's where the problem lies: Many artists may not want that at all!

Getty Images says no to AI images

To generate AI images, millions of publicly available images and photos are used, but also often photos from databases whose content is subject to payment. The image generators operate in a legal gray area, as the images and photos are only used partially and often in a distorted manner.

Getty Images does n't want to cause itself a headache and therefore only allows images that have been created and edited by humans. The reason for this step is the open copyright issues in connection with AI-generated images. The Yoda in the picture above is a certain drawing style - but who did it come from and did the artist even agree? Or was it really created entirely with an AI?

Have I been trained?

With a search engine, artists (and of course everyone else) can check whether their photos, images, drawings, etc. are being used by image generators to generate AI images.

To do this, simply go to the search engine “Have I been trained” (see HERE ) and enter keywords there or upload your own works. You can also ask questions about the search engine
on Twitter

Artists Holly Herndon and Mathew Dryhurst developed the search engine that searches for matches to keywords, photos, drawings and so on in the 5.8 billion image dataset LAION , which also contains copyrighted images.

An author on the 1E9 did the experiment himself and actually discovered several photos using the search engine, which he made available for free use, but also photographs that were protected by copyright and were never released for any other use.

An artist from Ars Technika went looking for pictures and found photos of herself. What is scary, however, is the origin of the photos: they were pictures from her medical files, taken by a doctor who died several years ago.

You can have photos deleted!

If you find a photo of yourself in the search engine and do not agree that it is used for AI images, you can request that it be deleted directly from LAION (see HERE ).

Unfortunately, LAION apparently only deletes photos that have a corresponding name tag on them - such a request for deletion will probably not work for other works such as drawings.

Conclusion

So it's a double-edged sword: On the one hand, it's of course amusing to generate AI images. On the other hand, photos, drawings and digital works by artists who may not have agreed to this at all and of course are not rewarded for it are also used as a basis.
