Artificial intelligence (AI) and its applications have become an integral part of today's digital world. Platforms like ChatGPT and Midjourney have the potential to enrich our lives and help us process information efficiently. But with the growing importance of AI systems, the associated risks are also increasing. One of these dangers is that AI can be used as a medium for propaganda and manipulation.
And this is all happening NOW
In the last few months we have reported on, among other things, Julian Assange weakened in prison? , Fake image of Pope Francis causes confusion or arrest of Donald Trump that never happened . But these were also big topics: Abuse of ChatGPT: AI model used to create malware, or criminals use AI to fake the kidnapping of a child!
AI propaganda: definition and background
Propaganda refers to information that is often misleading or manipulative and is used specifically to influence public opinion or achieve specific political or ideological goals. Artificial intelligence can serve as a tool for spreading propaganda by helping to increase the volume, speed and adaptability of propaganda content.
Forms of AI propaganda and their effects
Deepfake technology is one of the most well-known forms of AI propaganda. It allows you to create realistic images or videos of people by manipulating their appearance and voice using AI algorithms. This technique can be used to portray politicians or public figures in compromising situations or to accuse them of making false statements. Deepfakes can destabilize political systems and undermine trust in public institutions.
Another example of AI propaganda is mass-generated false information. AI systems can create large volumes of fake news articles or social media posts to promote or discredit specific topics or ideas. Through the targeted distribution of this content, public opinion can be steered in the desired direction.
Personalization of propaganda is another important element enabled by AI. AI algorithms can be used to create content tailored to users' individual beliefs and preferences. This creates a personalized propaganda experience that traps users in their opinion bubbles and promotes the polarization of society.
Automated social media bots can also have a significant impact on the spread of propaganda. AI-controlled bots can use social media platforms to specifically and efficiently spread misinformation and propaganda. By automatically creating and distributing content, bots can influence the public discourse climate and manipulate opinions.
Risks and consequences of AI propaganda
The impact of AI propaganda is far-reaching and can lead to a number of serious problems. One of these problems is the undermining of democratic processes. AI propaganda can be used to influence elections and other democratic processes by undermining public trust in the integrity of political institutions and actors. This can lead to instability and affect the functioning of democracies.
AI propaganda can also contribute to the polarization of society. By helping to trap people in opinion bubbles and presenting them with personalized content, it can exacerbate social divisions and political polarization. This makes social cohesion and constructive dialogue more difficult.
Vulnerability to foreign influence is another risk. AI propaganda can be used by foreign actors to influence public opinion in another country and foment political or social unrest. This type of influence poses a serious threat to a country's national security and sovereignty.
Protective measures against AI propaganda
There are a number of steps individuals and organizations can take to protect themselves from the dangers of AI propaganda. First of all, it is important to promote media literacy. Good media literacy helps to recognize and critically question false information and propaganda. Educational institutions and organizations should conduct educational work to inform people about the dangers of AI propaganda and the importance of media literacy.
Using diverse sources of information is another protective mechanism. Users should make sure to obtain information from different sources and perspectives in order to get a balanced picture of current topics and events. This can help mitigate the impact of AI propaganda on public opinion.
The use of fact-checking tools and platforms can also help protect against AI propaganda. These tools allow users to check the credibility of information and detect misinformation. The use of such resources can contribute to a more responsible use of information and curb the spread of propaganda.

Conclusion : Artificial intelligence offers many opportunities. But it also poses dangers if it is misused for propaganda and disinformation. The risks associated with AI propaganda can have far-reaching effects on democratic processes, polarization of society and vulnerability to foreign influence. It is therefore crucial that both individuals and organizations take steps to protect themselves from these dangers and mitigate the negative effects of AI propaganda.
Governments and policymakers should also take measures to curb the misuse of AI technologies for propaganda purposes. This can be done, for example, by introducing laws and regulations that limit the use of AI propaganda and combat the spread of misinformation. Collaboration between governments, technology companies and civil society organizations is also crucial to jointly develop strategies to combat AI propaganda.
Finally, technology companies and AI developers should consider ethical guidelines and responsibilities when designing and implementing AI systems. The development of AI applications should always be carried out in accordance with ethical principles and human rights standards to ensure that they are used for the benefit of society and do not contribute to the spread of propaganda and misinformation.
All stakeholders, be they individuals, organizations, governments or technology companies, must recognize their role in solving AI challenges and take action to reduce the negative impact on our society. Only through joint efforts can we ensure that artificial intelligence fulfills its potential for the benefit of humanity and is not misused as a tool for manipulation and propaganda.
Especially because of the increasing spread of AI propaganda, it is important that there are platforms like us that actively deal with the topic.
We have been making an important contribution to combating disinformation and fake news on the Internet for over 10 years. We check content and educate our community about current fraud attempts and manipulation tactics. The people behind Mimikama have a deep understanding of cultural, social and emotional aspects that an AI cannot capture to the same extent. Humans are able to recognize subtle nuances and contextual information that are difficult for an AI to capture. People can also learn from experience and react flexibly to new situations. An artificial intelligence, even an advanced one, cannot completely replace us or similar platforms because it is unable to reproduce human empathy, intuition and judgment. These human skills are crucial to distinguish between intentional propaganda and unintentional errors and to take appropriate action against disinformation and manipulation. It remains important that human expertise continues to play a central role in addressing the challenges posed by AI propaganda.
