The use of the generative chatbot ChatGPT from OpenAI has advantages and disadvantages in terms of the understandability but also credibility of information. According to a new study from the University of Zurich , correct tweets generated using artificial intelligence (AI) are easier to understand than those written by humans. And: AI tweets with fake news are harder to recognize as false information.

Convincing fake news

The researchers wanted to know whether people could distinguish between disinformation and accurate information in the form of tweets. It was also intended to determine whether the 697 test subjects recognized whether a tweet was written by a real Twitter user or whether it was generated by GPT-3. It was about climate change, the safety of vaccines, the corona pandemic, the theory that the earth is flat and homeopathic cancer treatments.

On the one hand, GPT-3 was able to generate accurate and easier-to-understand information compared to tweets from real Twitter users. The experts were also able to demonstrate that the tool had a frightening talent for creating extremely convincing fake news. Worryingly, participants were unable to determine whether tweets were created by GPT-3 or written by real Twitter users.

High potential for abuse

“The study shows that AI-powered systems could be misused for large-scale disinformation campaigns on any topic imaginable, which would endanger not only public health but also the integrity of information ecosystems that are essential for functioning democracies,” warn the Zurich communications scientists forceful in their investigation.

The researchers recommend strict, evidence-based and ethically sound regulations to address the potential threat of these disruptive technologies. “Proactive regulation is crucial to avert potential damage from AI-controlled disinformation campaigns,” concluded study leader Nikola Biller-Andorno.
