Many gaming and educational apps violate the privacy of children and young people, as a study by Pixalate shows. The experts examined around 379,000 apps intended for children.
Big data from (not only) children's apps
The companies behind the apps make them available for advertising purposes. These include games like “Angry Birds” or “Candy Crush”. Locations, IP addresses and other information that can be used to identify children are passed on. The companies fed with this data can determine the children's areas of interest and use this to display targeted advertising.
Data for targeted advertising
Many apps also ask children to grant access to sensitive functions such as the camera and microphone, according to Pixalate. The research shows that eight percent of all apps in the Apple App Store and seven percent of all apps in the Google Play Store are aimed at children. 42 percent of these apps are likely to transmit personal information to advertisers. According to Pixalate research, advertisers who receive this type of information spend 3.1 times more money on child-targeted advertising than on general audience applications.
Children's apps in the Google Play Store safer
In the categories examined, Google's offerings for children were, on average, safer than those in the App Store, according to Pixalate . 22 percent of kid-focused apps in the Apple App Store were casual about privacy, compared to 12 percent in the Google Play Store. Apple and Google deny that children's privacy is being compromised, Washington Post According to the iPhone inventor, there was a conflict of interest between Apple and Pixalate, while Google described the investigation's methodology as "too broad."
