Climate activists have occupied a branch of a Swiss bank. With this campaign they wanted to draw attention to climate change and its importance for humanity.

The most important thing about the climate activists’ action in brief:

  • Played tennis in a bank
  • Were charged with trespassing
  • Acquittal in the end due to “justifiable emergency”

The whole action took place in November 2018: The climate activists from the Lausanne Action Climat (LAC) movement went to a Credit Suisse branch in Lausanne in sportswear.

Once there, the following happened: They set up a network and played tennis in the bank while customers were still busy. This game was a symbolic act because the bank was advertising the tennis professional Roger Federer.

The climate activists wanted to draw attention to the contrast within the bank: on the one hand, they advertise with the positive image of a tennis player, but on the other hand, they accuse the bank of investing in environmentally harmful companies and technologies.

Report of trespassing

It happened as it had to: the bank reported the activists. Trespassing was called. But from this point onwards it gets exciting!

After the young people lodged an objection and were subsequently represented by 13 lawyers on a pro bono basis, they were actually acquitted.

Climate activists were right

The surprising verdict was acquittal. From the NZZ reporting we learn:

Single judge Philippe Colelough announced on Monday evening that the activists would be acquitted of the charge of squatting due to a “justifiable emergency”. In view of the impending and already evident climate emergency, their action was “necessary and appropriate”. The demonstrators had no other option than to draw attention to this with their well-thought-out action.

Even if this judgment must be viewed with caution as it does not constitute a license for similar actions, the media suggests that it is a historic judgment.
