But is that really necessary? Other private supplementary insurance policies also offer many additional services. Which supplementary health insurance policy makes sense and which one is not worth it for everyone?

International health insurance: Important for many vacationers

International travel health insurance is generally recommended for everyone who travels.

“Vacationers are also insured by statutory health insurance abroad, but only in certain countries,” points out Bastian Landorff, health insurance expert at the Bavarian Consumer Center.

The statutory health insurance company also does not reimburse the costs of any return transport to Germany. It is advisable to supplement the statutory scope of benefits with private international travel insurance.

Additional dental insurance: Not useful for everyone

If you want to have a gap in your teeth fixed with high-quality dentures, you will only receive a subsidy from the statutory health insurance fund. This is based on simple supply. The patient must pay the remaining costs themselves. Good supplementary insurance is not cheap, but can significantly reduce the out-of-pocket costs for expensive treatments. However, an expensive policy is not right for everyone.

“If you are satisfied with simple dentures as part of your standard care and are willing to pay the remaining costs yourself, you do not need expensive additional dental insurance,” says Landorff.

However, if you don't want to do without additional protection, you can look for affordable contracts that add a little more to the basic health insurance benefit.

Supplementary health insurance: single room with treatment by a senior doctor > This can be expensive

In the hospital, people with statutory health insurance usually lie in a shared room and are treated by the doctor on duty. If treatment by a senior doctor is important to you, additional inpatient insurance may make sense.

“However, a 35-year-old quickly pays more than 30 euros per month for a single room rate with senior doctor treatment,” says the expert.

If you have pre-existing illnesses, the insurance company may also charge an additional contribution. If you primarily value better accommodation, but not the senior doctor's treatment, you should think carefully about taking out additional insurance.

“In this case, it may make sense to pay the extra charge for better room accommodation yourself instead of being financially burdened with a high premium for additional insurance for years,” the expert points out.

Private supplementary nursing care insurance: Contributions have increased

Private supplementary care insurance is intended to cushion residual care costs. These arise because statutory nursing care insurance only covers part of the nursing care costs. Many insured people have come under pressure in recent years due to premium adjustments. If you cancel, the money you paid in for many additional care tariffs is gone.

“If you have trouble paying the premium right from the start, it’s better not to take out private supplementary care insurance,” advises Bastian Landorff.
