Everything is just stolen: The Facebook page “Krone-24.at” adorns itself with someone else’s feathers and leads users to an expensive subscription trap.
Cybercriminals pose as the Kronen Zeitung, the tabloid newspaper with the highest circulation in Austria. Why? The fraudsters are trying to lure Facebook users into a nasty trap using the newspaper's corporate design.
This is about the Facebook page “Krone-24.at”. The fraudsters give the impression that it is an official website of the Kronen Zeitung and use sponsored advertising to pretend that Apple is giving away the very latest iPhone models after a warehouse fire in Austria. That's a lie!
Photo series for the competition:
The advertising article leads to a website that continues to use the design of the Kronen Zeitung and displays so-called fabricated content - the content is therefore fictitious . The pseudo-editorial presentation is intended to reassure the user that it is an official article. There are always links interspersed throughout the text.
Be careful, subscription trap!
And from here it can get really expensive: Anyone who clicks on such a link will be redirected to a data entry mask. The impression is still given that the user can get an iPhone – for just EUR 1. If you don't read the small print here, you'll fall straight into a nasty subscription trap!
Because the true purpose of this whole charade is written here:
All new customers take part in the raffle for the campaign product shown. If you are one of the lucky winners, you will be contacted directly by email. This special offer includes a 5-day trial of an affiliated subscription service. Your credit card will then automatically be charged the monthly subscription fee (EUR 89.99) . If for any reason you are not satisfied with the service, you may cancel with 5 days' notice. The subscription renews monthly unless canceled. This campaign expires December 31, 2019.
Indications of cyber criminals
If you take a closer look at the Facebook page “Krone-24.at” you will find some evidence of a fake. The site has only existed for a short time , which is typical for such fake sites, and the imprint is completely missing.
This type of fraud has also been around for a long time. Even if Facebook quickly deletes these pages, some keep coming back. The sole purpose of these sites is to lead users to the actual target, such as a subscription trap, data collectors and other forms of fraud.
