When it comes to quotes on the internet, you should take a closer look. Same with this one.

We received a few requests for a quote image from Renate Künast – German politician, Bündnis90/Die Grünen. And she is said to have said the following, according to this picture:

“Integration starts with you as a German learning Turkish!”

Renate Künast The Greens

This is not the first time that we have received requests for quote images (especially in the area of politics). From twisted statements to made-up statements, you have to be prepared for anything on the internet. Anyone who Easter Day knows what I'm talking about.

So let’s take a closer look at this quote.

The fact check

It can be said: The quote is not true or Künast did not say it that way.

The alleged quote has been circulating as a meme since the beginning of 2015 and is based on a statement by Renate Künast that she made on the Beckmann - der Talk on August 30, 2010.

Green Party Quotes blog wrote on October 7, 2016:

On the talk show “Beckmann” Thilo Sarrazin, Aygül Özkan – then Social Minister of Lower Saxony – and Renate Künast once sat together, with Sarrazin having difficulty pronouncing Ms. Özkan’s name correctly. Ms. Künast then apparently intervened several times. The original quote above reads as follows:

“Integration starts with you as a German remembering your name.”

Künast himself also commented on the circulating quote via Facebook and wrote on February 23, 2015:

There has been a campaign for some time now that claims that I said that integration begins with us all first learning Turkish.
I didn't make that statement.

Years ago, in a discussion on “Beckmann/ARD”, I reacted to Thilo Sarrazin, who simply refused to correctly pronounce the name of Aygül Özkan, another interviewee, and said:
“Integration begins with you as a German making your own Remember the name.”

This campaign will not be discussed in more detail.

There is also an archived Twitter post by Erika Steinbach - German politician, independent, CDU until January 2017 - who has often attracted attention in the past through controversial publications on Twitter (see Germany 2030 ).

This deleted tweet contains the requested quote image:

Result:

It is a distorted quote that Renate Künast did not express in this way.

The sentence used to be: “Integration begins with you as a German remembering your name” and not “Integration begins with you as a German learning Turkish”.

However, it is not clear who the original creator of this image was.
