However, upon closer inspection, this portrayal of Kuleba's words turns out to be misleading.

However, the true essence and context of this statement continues to raise questions about the subtle tactics of diplomacy and the power of the media to distort statements and influence public opinion. Let's delve deeper into this mysterious case of twisted words.

The Facebook post that sparked the debate

A picture on Facebook shows Dmytro Kuleba making his comments, flanked by a controversial headline: “Ukrainian Foreign Minister threatens war if Germany does not agree to join NATO after the end of the war.”

MIMIKAMA

This sentence, which immediately sent shockwaves across social media, suggests that Kuleba is threatening war if Germany does not agree to admit Ukraine into NATO. But is this the whole truth?

What did Dmytro Kuleba really say?

The alleged threat comes from a video interview that Kuleba conducted for “Welt”, “Bild” and “Politico” on June 30, 2023 , in which the Ukrainian foreign minister says: “After the war, it would be suicidal for Europe “Not accepting Ukraine as a NATO member because that would mean leaving the war option open.”

If interpreted correctly, this statement is not a threat of war from Ukraine, but a call for vigilance in view of possible new aggression from Russia. Kuleba added: “The only way to close the door to Russian aggression against Europe and the Euro-Atlantic region as a whole is to admit Ukraine into NATO.

Context and background: Ukraine's pursuit of NATO membership

The debate about Ukraine joining NATO is not a new phenomenon. Ukraine was already discussed as a potential member at the NATO summit in 2008. However, out of consideration for Russia, the proposal was withdrawn at the time. At the center of the rejection of Ukraine's rapid accession were Germany, led by Chancellor Angela Merkel, and France, led by President Nicolas Sarkozy.

That 2008 decision “opened the door to Putin’s invasion of Georgia and eventual illegal annexation of Crimea,” Kuleba said . In his view, NATO membership is “the path to peace” for Ukraine.

Future perspectives: Ukraine, NATO and Germany

Next week, NATO wants to discuss a possible rapprochement between Ukraine and the alliance. However, Chancellor Olaf Scholz has already made it clear that there is no question for him of including Ukraine in the alliance before the Russian war of aggression ends.

Conclusion

A closer look at Kuleba's statement shows that the viral Facebook post is misleading. The Ukrainian foreign minister did not threaten war if NATO membership did not come about. He simply pointed out the possible consequences if Ukraine continued to be excluded from the alliance.

This incident highlights the need to approach media content critically and verify sources before sharing them. Ultimately, it is our responsibility to maintain truth and context in order to inform and enrich public debate.
