The new law is intended to prevent “fake news” and false statements during election campaigns.

As the ORF , the press and the Kleine Zeitung report, France is introducing a law against “fake news” and fake news.

On Wednesday night, the government majority voted in first reading for President Emmanuel Macron's plans.

The draft law stipulates that parties or candidates can take urgent action against publicly disseminated falsehoods with the help of a judge up to three months before a national election. The authors face up to one year in prison and a fine of 15,000 euros. In addition, social networks such as Facebook or Twitter should commit to greater transparency when disseminating content for payment.

President Macron wants to prevent the spread of rumors and false statements during election campaigns. According to the bill, “any inaccurate or misleading statement or accusation” made in the course of an election campaign would be defined as “false news.”

However, critical voices warn of an attempt by the president to “stop unwanted information.” Abuse in the form of “censorship” and a “muzzle” for the media and citizens is conceivable.

Several procedural steps are still necessary before the law is finally passed.
