Robotic lawn mowers are becoming increasingly popular. They move almost silently through the garden and do the work almost entirely by themselves. Unfortunately, they pose a deadly danger to wild animals and pets.
The devices do have sensors and should react to obstacles by stopping or shifting into reverse. However, these are often not adjusted sensitively enough and injuries to animals occur again and again.
It is better to only use robot lawn mowers during the day under supervision
Many people leave their robot lawn mowers running at night to protect their children and pets, which particularly endangers nocturnal animals such as hedgehogs. For example, when they encounter a robot lawn mower, they curl up instead of running away. They often suffer very serious cuts that can lead to death. Injured animals are taken in and cared for by various wildlife stations, but many animals have to be euthanized due to the severity of their injuries.
The robots can also be fatal to pets. Countless toads, frogs and insects are also chopped to death by the silent garden workers.
“Robot lawn mowers are a great danger to animals and we strongly advise against the use of these devices for animal welfare reasons. If you don't want to do without it, please only use it during the day and under supervision."
VGT animal welfare speaker Ines Haider
If you do find an injured wild animal in your garden, there are various contact points for wild animals in need, which are summarized under vgt.at (for Austria) and Wild Animal Protection Germany eV (for Germany). The easiest way to help wild animals is to create a garden that is close to nature and has plenty of shelter options. A natural garden promotes biodiversity and offers a healthy habitat for many species of insects.
