Scientists want to use this method to gain insight into injuries in children and tested belt systems on live pigs!
Animal rights activists are currently criticizing several scientists from the Chinese Research Institute for Traffic Medicine who have carried out crash tests with live pigs. According to the company, fifteen 10-week-old pigs are used for this purpose. The reason for this is that the pigs' body structure is closest to that of a 6-year-old child. The study will examine what injuries occur in children who were strapped into a child seat and end up in a head-on collision.
The result was published in the American journal “International Journal of Crashworthiness” by Qiaolin Wang, Hongyi Xiang, Sishu Guan, Zhikang Liao, Xiyan Zhu, Zhiyong Yin and Hui Zhao.

The crash test result
The scientists reportedly gave the 15 pigs no food for 24 hours before the test and, according to The Independent, they were not allowed to drink anything for six hours. The pigs were each strapped into a child seat, which was attached to so-called sleds.

7 pigs died immediately, the other 8 pigs survived for a few hours!
At a test speed between 30 and 50 km/h, half of the pigs died immediately after the impact. The other half survived for a few more hours. Most of them had damaged lungs, and there were also injuries to the spleen and liver, bloody wounds, internal bleeding and broken bones.

Animal rights organization PETA
On October 25, 2019, the animal rights organization PETA contacted the Chinese Research Institute for Traffic Medicine and the Daping Hospital and asked those responsible to stop using live animals for these tests. There is no law in China that requires such cruel experiments.
