He had to extend his authorization for the online banking app, it said in a text message from his alleged house bank. A man opened his Internet browser using a link included in the message. The deceived person entered the access data for his online banking app and, as requested, a TAN. We reported on such a false SMS here, among other places. ( HERE )
An error message appeared and the process was aborted, said the injured party. Finally, the suspected fraudsters contacted the victim by telephone. The man, who spoke standard German, asked him to mention his TAN several times. The person called did as he was told, with the result that damage was caused in the upper five-digit euro range.
Attempts at fraud occur again and again with emails or SMS messages from various financial institutions that look deceptively real.
- However, banks and savings banks do not contact their customers this way.
- Neither are TANs required to be transmitted over the telephone.
The police warn:
- Be skeptical! If in doubt, call your bank using the phone number you know.
- Do not use the contact details that may be included in the signature of the fraudulent email: the fraudsters are hiding behind them.
