A back covered in pustules, the term LEPRA in capital letters, a suspected press ban and, last but not least, the term refugees in this context: a meme is ready that unsettles people. And it's completely pointless.
“It was just a matter of time. Salzburg: LEPRA case in tent city” Somehow this meme, which was published on June 16, 2018 and has a quite vivid viral spread, seems familiar. That's right, this leprosy case from Salzburg is based on a three-year-old story that posed no real danger back in 2015.
But the term leprosy can of course be quite triggering, especially when you can lump so many terms together:
Let us therefore look again at the case from September 2015 and address the allegations:
1. The picture has nothing to do with Salzburg. For the creator, it only serves as a symbolic image and thus propagates the “worst case”.
2. Are there cases of leprosy in Salzburg? On September 18, 2015, the “Kronen Zeitung” reported on a leprosy case in Salzburg. This was a military medical note in a file. However, the disease did NOT break out and there was no risk of infection.
In detail
the “ Krone ” reported on a leprosy case in the Salzburg asylum tent camp . This is not a fake , but rather a military medical note in a file.

Of course, there was initially a lot of dramatization in the Crown's reporting, but ultimately we learn in this article that there was no danger and that the disease never broke out.
“But the disease has not broken out, he is not contagious,” say the doctors.
As well as:
There is therefore no immediate danger because he is not contagious,” the “Krone” learned on Friday evening.
It is also reported:
The 33-year-old was not part of the large stream of refugees that has been flooding into Germany through Salzburg for days.
Somehow then no horror. Let's summarize: A person had leprosy , but the disease had not broken out. There was no risk of infection. Viewed from the 2018 perspective, one can even go further and say that this report had little relevance because there really was no outbreak. Likewise, the article in the Kronen-Zeitung shows that the media did report on it. Focus also took up the topic.
Leprosy!
Since this one case had not broken out and no one had become infected, the discovery itself was subsequently not worth reporting. But how can you create a scandal out of this? That's right: you take this message and create a horror scenario. This is supported by an unsavory picture showing leprosy, then a cover-up press is added to the whole thing and you have a great little story.
Only the author of the status report knows why this three-year-old and grossly manipulative meme was republished.
World Leprosy Day takes place annually on the last Sunday in January. Every year it reminds us of the plight of those affected. Leprosy is a treatable and curable disease. More information can be found at DAHW German Leprosy and Tuberculosis Aid eV
