“One thing is clear: Pope Francis is keeping his fingers crossed for Real Madrid in the CL final…”
A small, humorous meme that can be found on the FUMS (Football is Fun) Facebook page is currently being shared quite frequently. This evaluation points out that two certain events, if they collide, would result in a third event.
To be more precise: Whenever a Prince of England got married and Liverpool won the Champions League, something would happen to the Pope. This is what this meme looks like:
Fact check: Is that so?
Let's first look at the 5 successes in the European Cup / Champions League that Liverpool achieved:
- 1977: 3-1 against Borussia Mönchengladbach (in Rome)
- 1978: 1-0 against FC Brugge (in London)
- 1981: 1-0 against Real Madrid (in Paris)
- 1984: 1:1 a.t., 4:2 i. E. against AS Roma (in Rome)
- 2005: 3:3 a.t., 3:2 i.e. E. against AC Milan (in Istanbul)
- 2018: potentially possible, is in the final
Now a look at the weddings of English princes:
- Wedding Phillip November 20, 1947
- Wedding Charles July 29, 1981
- Wedding Charles April 9, 2005
- Wedding William April 29, 2011
- Wedding Harry (scheduled) May 19, 2018
In addition, briefly the anniversaries of the deaths of the last popes:
- Pius XII October 9, 1958
- John XXIII June 3, 1963
- Paul XI August 6, 1978
- John Paul I September 28, 1978
- John Paul II April 2, 2005
And assassination attempts on a pope:
- Assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II on May 13, 1981
- Assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II on May 12, 1982
We now take the intersections from this and can confirm: Yes, the representation on FUMS shows events that took place in the same year in the past, but (wink) of course have no causal connections.
It's different...
However, there is a very similar chain letter distributed via WhatsApp that ends up being wrong. The Swiss website Tele1.ch drew attention to this false version, which speaks of a pope who died in 1981.
Here is the correct version from Tele1:
There was an assassination attempt on John Paul II in 1981, but he survived. John Paul II was saved in a five-hour operation and was able to return to the Vatican a few weeks later. He remained pope until his death in April 2005.
