LGBTQ+ creators appear as superheroes on TikTok, demonstrate their superpower and create their own comic universe with the community.
With the hashtag challenge #TikTokComic, TikTok is now shining the light on some members of the queer community who are not only real role models, but are also starting a campaign for more representation.
The LGBTQ+ creators appear as superheroes and demonstrate their personal superpower in creative videos. The community is also encouraged to share their own heroic stories or further develop existing stories.
At the end of the campaign, TikTok will produce its own comic based on the most exciting suggestions from the community. Strong LGBTQ+ content finds a home on TikTok and a large community that is interested and open to learning for an even more positive coexistence. The hashtag #LGBTQIA has already generated 5.6 billion views on the platform. The LGBTQ+ community is an integral part of TikTok's global creative community and brings a lot of talent, authenticity and joy to the platform. Our queer creators not only promote acceptance, but also raise awareness of their issues through education. This helps everyone understand better, be better informed and be better fellow human beings.
The numbers speak for the heroes
Despite the progress made in recent years, it is clear that society still has a long way to go towards full equality.
A study* commissioned by TikTok signals in many places how much representation the LGBTQ+ community is lacking. For example, 47 percent of those surveyed said that there is not enough public visibility of the LGBTQ+ community.
With the #TikTokComic campaign, TikTok wants to start exactly there and not only attract attention in heteronormative society, but also introduce real role models who defeat the stereotypes. No wonder, then, that 80 percent of those surveyed have a clear desire for equal representation of all people.
Strong role models and strong stories
under the hashtag #TikTokComic with many motivating videos in which the Pride superheroes show off their superpowers and tell their stories.
The community is free to pass on the stories or share their own hero story. The most creative contributions are then captured in an illustrated comic. For example, we see Flying Urgent in the role of Mirror-Man, who protects himself and others with his mirror shield. Veoja also does the honors as a shapeshifter and clearly shows that the free choice of her shape and form is an absolute superpower. The song for the campaign is provided by Hanna Batka , who also shows off her superpowers as a healer.
The superhero alter egos are based on the creators’ own experiences and strengths but also on those of their community. In addition to Flying Bengel, Hanna Veoja, Die Michalskis , Irys , Leonie Schröder and Savio as Guardians of Equality. #TikTokComic community to tell their own heroic stories or to continue existing stories.
There is also prominent support from entertainer Ross Antony and Germany's first officially outed trans actor Brix Schaumburg , both of whom fight for the queer community not only in comics.
„There is still a long way to go until the LGBTQ+ community is fully accepted by society and given equal rights, and we would like to accompany and support it. That's why we're happy and grateful that TikTok has become a space where the queer community can creatively express themselves, present themselves and show their cultural influence „
says Tobias Henning, General Manager TikTok Germany.
For more security and a good feeling
In addition to the campaign, TikTok is constantly working to create an inclusive environment.
Therefore, hateful content, anti-LGBTQ+ content and the accounts running them will be removed from the platform. Violating hashtags and search queries are also blocked by moderation teams. Instead, reference is made to the Community Guidelines to emphasize that hateful ideologies have no place on the platform. In order to further ensure the safety of the community, various protective mechanisms have been implemented.
These include, among other things, restricted mode, settings for who can interact with your own content, comment filters and comprehensive reporting options in the app. *=YouGov chart report LGBTQ+ survey Germany, carried out by YouGov on behalf of FAKTOR 3, field time: August 9th - 15th, 2021, 1,009 respondents
