79 percent of social media users first publish personal milestones online

A good three out of four social media users publish milestones, such as a new relationship, the birth of a child or the successful completion of school or training, first on social networks before telling friends and family in person. This is the result of a recent study by the marketing company Sprout Social .

Facebook is the most popular

Facebook is the most popular among respondents for sharing significant events. It also has its own “milestone function” or “life event function” with which users can quickly and succinctly get to the point.

The online service Instagram ranks in second place, followed by Snapchat, Twitter and YouTube.

The study also found that 48 percent of users who read a milestone entry made an order shortly afterwards in the same context - for example for an engagement or the birth of a child. According to the researchers, this is a very interesting aspect for marketing agencies to consider.

Trust in social media

Placing advertising near milestone entries could be very important in the future to generate sales.
75 percent of those surveyed say that they still seek to talk to their circle of friends when something important has happened in their lives. This usually involves a text message via smartphone or a phone call. Less than a third say they communicate important milestones in letters or cards.
The overwhelming majority of study participants were of the opinion that sharing on the social web is usually enough to inform as many important people as possible about milestones. Source: pte
