We tell you the story of Marina Sabatier and have a request for you.

“When I saw that, I was speechless. Like if you are also against child bullies. Share the picture as often as possible so every child bully knows we hate them!”
Like me on...
We have often reported on pages that vie for likes using such images, and this image was also a topic for us in January 2013
Back then, the request, which reeked of likability, was “Like in 5 seconds if you are a bully against children – ignore if you love it”. The creators are not interested in starting an action against abuse. This is about likes. A disdainful thumbs up under the cloak of concern, regardless of any personal rights.
But will this ever help any child? Will your like ever help a child get beaten less? No! No person who hits children will ever read a status like this and think, “Oooooh, they all seem to be against it!” I wouldn't have thought! “Then I’d better stop hitting my child.”
Such violence exists, it is clear to everyone. But it doesn't help, absolutely nothing, to share such a picture. There are other ways to take a stand against violence against children, for example by joining a child protection organization .
The story of Marina Sabatier
The image has been spreading rapidly since 2012, and not without reason, because that year a trial was decided , which caused both cheers and criticism in France and became known Marina affair
Marina was born on February 27, 2001 as an unwanted child. The parents, Éric and Virginie Sabatier, gave her up for care, but took her back a month later. The violence against Marina began early. When she was just one year old, she went to the doctor with a broken finger. This ordeal continued over the years, until that fateful night in August 2009.
On the night of August 6th to 7th, 2009, Marina's parents locked her naked in the basement after she was brutally beaten that evening. According to her mother, her last words were “mal à la tête” (“headache”) and “bonne nuit maman à demain” (“goodnight mommy, see you tomorrow”).
The judgment
On September 9th, the father reported Marina missing. During their investigations, the investigators finally came across various photos of Marina, including the photo that is now being shared so widely.
The father showed the investigators where the body was hidden!
In need of explanation, the father finally showed the investigators where he hid Marina's body. The autopsy revealed the rest and Marina's parents were immediately arrested.
Sentenced to 30 years
The hearing took place from June 11th to 26th, 2012. Both parents were sentenced to 30 years in prison, with no chance of being released after 20 years.
The scandal
A major discussion arose during the trial because, shockingly, the authorities knew about the abuse of Marina years beforehand, as was revealed through the court case. Marina's grandmother alerted the authorities back in 2006, but they were not taken seriously. In 2007, teachers noticed Marina's bruises, but dismissed her father's explanation that it was a "genetic defect." In July 2008, the principal of Marina's new school contacted the authorities. A medical officer certified 19 injuries, but the father was believed to be just everyday injuries. In July 2008, Marina was questioned by police but said nothing. During the trial it emerged that Marina's mother threatened that Marina would also go to prison if she revealed anything. The French Child Protection Association ( ASE ) was still looking into the case in May 2009, but was unable to find any child endangerment.
Over a period of six years, Marina was physically abused without any intervention from authorities. This severely questioned the coordination of the child protection association, police, doctors and schools in France.
A request
You now know the tragic story. You now know the child's name. That was Marina Sabatier. An eight-year-old girl who loved her parents to the end, but was never loved by her parents.
So would you please stop spreading the picture with clumsy liking?
And if you absolutely must share it: tell her story . Raise awareness that something like this could happen in your neighborhood. Stop trying to collect likes with the picture of the unfortunate Marina. But rather clarify that this is a crime that unfortunately occurs far too often.
Don't hit Marina again with this lust for liking, but give her peace.
