The claim

The headlines of many online newspapers this week spoke of Lionel Messi resigning.

Our conclusion

The short headlines often missed the important additional information that Messi did not mean immediate resignation from the Argentine national team.

Headlines must be short, but should also provide accurate information. Messi has not announced his immediate resignation from the Argentine national team. Rather, he said that he would no longer be there at the next World Cup in North America. The 35-year-old is currently under contract with Paris Saint-Germain. But real football fans know that anyway!

What Messi really said:

At the beginning of October, Lionel Messi had already announced on Star+: “Is it my last World Cup? Yes, definitely yes, definitely yes. I feel good physically, I was able to have a very good preseason this year, which I couldn't do last year because everything went the way it did.”

“It's four years until the next World Cup and I don't think it will be enough for me. Ending the whole thing this way is the best,” the 35-year-old football legend told the sports newspaper Olé this week. “I am ending my World Cup journey by playing my last game in a final. Everything I have experienced at this World Cup is very exciting, both what the fans here are experiencing and how the people in Argentina are enjoying it.”

So it doesn't necessarily have to be the last game with the Argentine national team, Lionel Messi left that open for now. And at Paris Saint-Germain the contract runs until June 2023 – with an option to extend.
