Five lions at a zoo in Khartoum, Sudan, are battling starvation
Starved lions in a zoo in Khartoum – The most important thing to start with:
- As a result of the economic crisis in Sudan, there is a lack of money for feed and medicine
- Already one lion died of malnutrition
- Animal rights activists are sounding the alarm
Shocking images on the internet. Lions in a zoo in Sudan are on the verge of starvation.
There is no money for food and medicine! Thin to the bone, they roam around their cages. The skeleton protrudes from under the skin. Numerous flies sit on their fur. The lions in this zoo in Khartoum are at risk of starvation. As the AFP news agency reports, one lion has already died of malnutrition. The zoo apparently lacks the money to provide the lions with food and medicine. So now five lions are left with a tragic fate in Al-Qureshi Park.

Animal rights activists are sounding the alarm
Osman Salih started the #Sudananimalrescue (animal rescue in Sudan) campaign on Facebook, drawing attention to the extremely poor condition of the animals in the zoo. As a result, this tragic story is now receiving international attention. Animal rights activists are sounding the alarm online and campaigning for better treatment and the rescue of animals.
“I was shocked to see the condition the animals were in,” Salih wrote after a visit to the zoo. “These poor animals, like many others, urgently need food, medical attention and care. Otherwise they will die.”
His call is now being followed by many other compatriots and animal rights activists who share his concern for the animals. There are calls for the lions to be relocated if the zoo in Khartoum still does not have the appropriate resources to care for the animals.
Zoo has no food for the animals
Due to the existing economic crisis in Sudan, food prices have risen. Supplying the population is already a challenge, but the animals also suffer.
"There is often no food, so we often buy something with our own money to feed the lions," the zoo's director told AFP.
The zoo is financed by the city as well as donations from private individuals.
International and regional support
The condition of the lions is serious, as some of them have lost almost two thirds of their weight. The increased attention in this story will hopefully bring about the desired change. Zoo employees should receive more support in caring for the lions. Osman Salih posted videos on Facebook in which you can see that veterinarians were with the lions to examine them.
A veterinarian from “Four Paws” and his team are on their way to the lions. A call is made for support.

Many citizens also came to the zoo to visit the animals and feed them.
“They suffer from serious illnesses,” said a nurse. “They are sick and malnourished.”
According to the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature), African lions are considered endangered. Between 1993 and 2014 their population fell by 43 percent; around 20,000 lions still live in Africa.
