The rescue of refugees from the waters off Europe is currently being hotly debated. In this context, an image also appears with a claim that is, however, not true.

That picture is shared on social media and mostly mockingly commented on:

The picture claims:

“THIS IS ALLEGEDLY THE LIST OF DROWNED REFUGEES – DISPLAYED IN THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT.
Those who arrive have no papers with them.
But those who drowned all had them and could therefore be identified? Do you notice anything???”

Is there really such a list?

At least she was lying there. This photo is from an action that took place in the EU Parliament 2015 Huffingpost . However, there is also a false claim in that article, which we will clarify shortly.

Are all the currently drowned refugees listed there?

As described above, the campaign took place in 2015, so this list cannot contain current names and dates. Strictly speaking , this list shows all dead refugees in the period from 1990 to 2012, a total of 17,306 dead, supplemented by 6,000 painted handprints who died between 2013 and 2015, plus 1,700 dead from the beginning of 2015 to April 2015.

Did they all drown?

Maybe you noticed that we deliberately didn't write about drowned refugees in the last paragraph.
This has the following simple reason: If we take a closer look at the list, we don't just discover drowned refugees. The photographer Olivier Hansen from the GUE/NGL organization took many photos of the action, and GUE/NGL published them on their Facebook page . And here let's take a look at the pictures!

We cropped and rotated that image for readability reasons; you can find the original here :

found dead in Spanish police station, drowned, executed, shot,...

These refugees did not all drown, as is falsely claimed, but died while escaping!

But they all had IDs! Or?

And that brings us to the second error, but let's just take another look at the list, you can find the original here :

Occasionally you can find names on the list, but for a lot of dead people you can only find their gender and age.

Conclusion

This list was actually there, but not currently, but in 2015. It doesn't list the refugees who drowned, but rather all the refugees who died while trying to escape.
In addition, the names of many refugees are not known. HERE you can view the current, complete list as a PDF.

The conclusion is that a three-year-old, real picture is used to incite hate speech out of pure ignorance or intention!
