Particular caution applies to older people, immunocompromised people and pregnant women. Anyone who stays informed about current warnings and pays attention to proper kitchen hygiene can protect themselves.
How to protect yourself from listeria? An overview
The online portal Food Warning regularly publishes product recalls. Product batches contaminated with listeria are a common cause. This year alone there have been warnings about various cheeses, salami and finished products due to listeria. Companies usually discover the error during their own quality controls. With the help of food monitoring, they initiate a recall and publish important key data such as the best-before date or batch number. Consumers can usually return the affected product to stores without a receipt and receive a refund of the purchase price. The Schleswig-Holstein Consumer Center (VZSH) also communicates the most important recalls via its Twitter and Facebook channels.
Raw foods: Kitchen hygiene counts
Listeria are bacteria that are primarily ingested through food and lead to illness. In addition to animal products, plant products can also be affected, as the bacteria occur in the soil and thus reach plants. The optimal growth conditions for listeria are between -0.4 and +45 degrees Celsius. They can therefore survive well on salads even in the refrigerator. “To protect yourself from listeria, raw plant foods should be washed thoroughly before consumption. This also applies to organic goods,” explains Saskia Vetter from VZSH. When it comes to animal foods, proper kitchen hygiene is crucial. Raw meat products should be prepared on a separate cutting board and heated before consumption to at least a core temperature of 70 degrees.
Listeria: Danger for pregnant women and the elderly
The listeriosis disease has many faces: fever, diarrhea or flu-like symptoms. It is particularly dangerous for immunocompromised older people or pregnant women. Listeria infections can lead to miscarriages during pregnancy. In severe cases, blood poisoning and meningitis occur in older people. Sensitive consumer groups should therefore avoid raw milk cheese, tea sausage, Mett or pre-cut salads.
