“Love scam” or “romance scam” is the name given to the scam that, in this case, was the woman's downfall.

Fraudsters gain the trust of their victims

Typical of this scam, she came into contact with an alleged ship's engineer via Facebook. The two continued to stay in touch via the “Hangout” messenger service, and the alleged engineer cleverly wooed her for several months. During this time he asked her several times for money, which she transferred to him. One transfer alone amounted to 45,000 euros. This case shows once again how important education is.

Information as prevention

Talk to friends and family about common scams!
Find out more on the internet – the options there are limitless. And note the following tips:

  • Never give money as a favor or loan to an acquaintance you have never met in person.
  • Critically question every request made in your direction. This also applies to sending photos: pictures of your living situation allow you to draw conclusions about your assets. You should generally not send intimate pictures.
  • Do not allow yourself to be used as a “way station” when two parties want to transfer money to each other. This also works without this intermediate step. They are only used to disguise the transfer channels.
  • The “way station” also refers to packages: Do not get involved in receiving a package or storing it. Criminals use such packages to create further lies and put victims under pressure.
  • Get friends involved. An outside perspective enables a more rational assessment and, if necessary, protects you from financial and emotional damage.
  • Report it to the police if you have fallen victim to fraud!

In the hope of finding true love, the fraudsters exploit the trust of their acquaintances in order to make a profit.
What remains is an empty wallet and the bitter aftertaste of having been blinded. We have already reported on this scam several times: HERE
