Using manipulative techniques, the fraudsters behind the love scam manage to gain the trust of their victims and trick them out of their money.
A 78-year-old woman from Pinzgau (Salzburg, Austria) also fell victim to internet fraudsters who managed to steal 78,000 euros from her.
Background to the love scam
The fraudsters often use fake identities and pose as wealthy or successful people. They write to their victims regularly and build a close relationship. Finally, they ask for money, for example for travel, gifts or help in emergency situations. They often use emotional blackmail methods and create a feeling of dependence in the victim. Older people in particular are often susceptible to this scam because they often feel lonely and are looking for contacts.
The case of a 78-year-old woman from Pinzgau
A 78-year-old woman from Pinzgau was the victim of such a scam. She was contacted by a man who identified himself as an American doctor who was supposedly serving on a UN mission in Lebanon. He gradually developed a romantic relationship with her.
As time passed, he asked her for money to leave Lebanon. The woman transferred a total of 78,000 euros to the fraudster in several transactions. When they made another demand for 90,000 euros, the woman contacted the police.
Conclusion
Love scam is a perfidious and widespread scam on the Internet. To avoid falling victim to this scam, users should always be skeptical when strangers suddenly approach them on the Internet and ask for money. If in doubt, they should contact the police and not make any payments.
