She is a victim of love scamming.
Love Scam = love fraud
So-called love scamming usually starts harmlessly. The scammers look for potential victims on online dating sites and social networks such as Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook and Co. A short online invitation to chat or a nice message serves as initial contact for many people. What follows are unusual life stories that initially leave a serious impression.
The specific case
This is what happened to a 40-year-old German woman from the Poseritz area who met a man on Instagram last year who was allegedly a member of the US military. He won the woman's trust with flattery and promises. Over several months, the perpetrator convinced the injured party to make several transfers through clever communication. Ultimately, the injured party suffered a five-figure amount of damage.
Criminal police are investigating fraud.
The police advise: As a general rule, you should not transfer money or respond to other demands from people you have never met or seen in person. There are a lot of scammers on the Internet in particular who want to make money off the good faith of those around them. So always be suspicious and question facts critically. Say “no” when online partners demand money. Confide in family members or friends and, if in doubt, ask the police.
Research helps
A scammer can often be identified as such through an internet search. To do this, simply enter the name of the internet acquaintance and the addition “Scammer” and/or use the online image search. Under no circumstances should you accept the demands. Ignore these. We also recommend backing up all chat histories, emails, etc. and filing a criminal complaint with the police.
