By the time the man realized that he had been taken in by fraudsters, he had already lost a lot of money. The police are warning about this love scam.

Love scammers are very sophisticated

The man developed a confidential relationship. The woman wanted to send him gifts through a manager from the USA. In order to receive the packages, the Emsdetten resident transferred money to two different accounts. The man never received the gifts. The contact then broke off. A meeting was then supposed to be organized by management, which is why he transferred money to the account details again. In total it was a five-figure euro amount. Only over time did the man realize that the contact was a love scammer.

The police warn and give tips on how to behave

The police are warning about love scams who are active on social media or dating platforms and trick their victims into believing they are interested in them. To find out whether your online acquaintance is a scammer, you can enter the name with the addition “scammer” into an internet search engine. In some cases, the search engine can already confirm a suspicion of fraud.

  • Never transfer money to people you have only met on the Internet and never in person and stop contact immediately if you request money.
  • Has a personal exchange already begun? Then secure all possible evidence of fraud - such as emails or messenger histories.
  • Has fraud occurred? Report it to the police! This also provides information about what to do in the event of “love scamming”, how to secure evidence and how to block perpetrators.

More information about scamming scams is available online from the federal and state police crime prevention department ( HERE ).
