The love scammers look for victims on online dating sites or social networks such as Instagram, Snapchat or Facebook and scour the member lists there.

Love scammers seem very serious. First.

A short online invitation to chat serves as an initial contact for many people. In order to make themselves interesting to potential victims, love scammers create unusual life stories - and they initially leave a serious impression.

The fraud began in autumn 2016 against a 72-year-old woman who has now paid around 100,000 euros to the perpetrators. An alleged Frenchman held them out on various internet platforms until September 2022. He repeatedly asked the injured party for money over the past six years. Sometimes a broken bank card, a fine or an illness served as the reason for financial help. The 72-year-old repeatedly transferred amounts of money to various accounts without ever meeting her online acquaintance in person. The total was already over 90,000 euros.

Even the “helper” was just a fraud

In mid-September 2022, online contact broke off completely. A few days ago, another unknown person contacted the 72-year-old via a messenger service and claimed to be from a bank. He gave the injured party the prospect of being able to get back the money that had been transferred to the fraudulent online acquaintance. In good faith, the injured party transferred more than 6,000 euros for transaction fees, taxes, etc. to the next fraudster. It was only when there were new demands for money that the victim became suspicious and reported it to the police.

The love scammers' camouflage is sophisticated and elaborate

Scam men pose as engineers, architects, sociologists, designers in the oil industry, veterinarians, computer specialists and US soldiers. In the photos on the scammer profile, female victims are presented with an attractive person - but the pictures are stolen. And even if the “new guy” claims to live in America or in other European countries, he is probably based in West Africa. However, the victims don't notice this because these chat acquaintances speak perfect English or use expensive translation tools for their emails.

Scam women prefer to pose as nurses, doctors, orphanage employees, teachers, actresses and businesswomen of all kinds. The women in the pictures on networks and dating sites are extremely attractive. But these images are also mostly stolen or photographed solely for love scamming. This can be seen in photo series with similar poses and clothing. Many women pretend to be Russian. But they can also come from South America, Thailand, Africa or Europe. All scam women also have a perfect command of the English language, sometimes even the German language.

Do not transfer money to strangers on the Internet. Never!

In general, you should not transfer money or accept other demands from people you have never met or seen in person. There are a lot of scammers on the Internet in particular who want to make a lot of money off of the good faith of their fellow human beings. So always be suspicious of incredible offers, whether when looking for an apartment or a partner. Love scammers don't want your feelings, just your money.
