A woman from Ochtrup has become a victim of so-called love scamming. Unknown people pose as people who are looking for a partner via email or chat. Once contact has been made, those contacted are overwhelmed with attention and expressions of love.

When an emotional relationship has been established and seems to be solidifying, the wrong soldiers, doctors or business people ask for financial support - for example because they supposedly ran into financial difficulties on a trip, had to pay for an expensive operation or their suitcase and passport were stolen .

Fake soldier pretends to need package

In the case of the 67-year-old from Ochtrup, an unknown person posed as an American soldier on duty in Yemen via a well-known social media platform. The woman from Ochtrup was supposed to accept a package for him. Due to the high value of the package, a four-digit fee must be paid. The woman believed and transferred the money. When another request for payment came, she became skeptical and filed a complaint.

Police warning about scamming

The police warn of the scammer scam, of which there are variants. Instead of true love, for example, a win, quick money or a dream job are promised.

  • Never transfer money to people who write to you unsolicited on the Internet.
  • If you are demanding money, stop contact immediately.
  • Has there already been more detailed contact online? Then secure all possible evidence of fraud - such as emails or chat, SMS and short message histories.
  • Has fraud occurred? Report it to the police!
