More and more people are being dragged into financial and emotional abyss by love scamming.

A current example concerns a 70-year-old woman. She had become friends with an alleged interior designer from Italy on Facebook. The conversation quickly shifted to a messenger service. There, the stranger alleged emergencies and convinced the gullible lady to transfer him a total of 14,000 euros within two months.

The fraud was only discovered when the 70-year-old's bank discovered that the recipient's account had been blocked in the meantime.

Tips for preventing love scamming

We, the Mimikama team, strongly warn about the danger of love scamming and give the following tips:

  • Be vigilant when making new contacts online. Not everyone who seems friendly actually is.
  • Be suspicious if your online acquaintance claims to be in dire straits and “urgently need money.” Real friends and acquaintances would rarely ask for financial support, especially if the acquaintance was only recently made over the Internet.
  • Be especially careful when someone asks for money. This is especially true if you have never met this person in person.

Cybercrime is real. Love scamming is a particularly perfidious form of this

  • Protect your personal information and money and don't be fooled by false feelings.
  • Protect yourself and your loved ones from this type of fraud.

Stay safe online!
