Incident at the immigration office in Magdeburg

The events of August 21, 2023 are alarming. At around 10:30 a.m., the entrance area of the immigration office on Breiter Weg in Magdeburg was suddenly attacked. The perpetrator: an asylum seeker. The result: several damaged and destroyed window panes.

Thanks to the quick reaction of the local police, the attacker was arrested near the crime scene almost immediately after the crime. A first step towards clarifying the background and possible motives of this attack.

Magdeburg police: “The perpetrator was found near the crime scene. Several criminal proceedings were initiated against the perpetrator, a dismissal was issued and a dangerous warning was issued.”

A wave of dismay

The immediate reaction to the incident was felt by both the public and the city administration. Mayor Simone Borris was horrified by the aggressiveness of the incident and recalled a similar incident in March of this year, in which around 20 people tried to break into the immigration office.

The agency's employees, who are already under great pressure, now also have to deal with the psychological consequences of the attack. This burden represents a challenge not only for the individual, but also for the functioning of the authority.

The city's reaction

What matters is how the city reacts after the incident. On the one hand, it is important to support the administrative employees and ensure their safety. Alderman Ronni Krug emphasized the urgent need for action and asked for support from the state of Saxony-Anhalt. Security measures also need to be discussed with the police.

However, the incident has no impact on the ongoing process optimization in the authority. Magdeburg remains true to its line and continues to offer support for foreign citizens, including through a new appointment system.
