Why do people turn to alternative media?

In this fast-paced world where information is available with just a click or tap, more and more people are turning to alternative websites and blogs for information. These people are less likely to turn on the television to watch the news or read fewer newspapers. They look for sources other than what they call “mainstream media.” But why do they do that?

Some people believe that major news networks and newspapers don't tell the whole truth. They feel like these media outlets are leaving out parts of the story. Some feel that they are not heard or understood by traditional media. And some are simply dissatisfied with the way news is presented.

Such concerns are not unfounded. There were or are actually times when renowned media made mistakes or only presented a one-sided presentation of a matter.

What happens if we only read one type of news?

But there are also problems if we only rely on alternative media. The first problem is that not all the information we find on the Internet is true. Some stories are misleading or even completely false. Without thorough verification, this false information can easily be spread.

The second problem is that we can end up in a “bubble”. This means that we only read information that confirms our pre-existing beliefs. This can make our view of the world one-sided. We only see one side of the story and believe it to be the whole truth. This makes it difficult to accept and understand other opinions.

Why should we still read mainstream media and fact checks?

Despite their problems, mainstream media and fact-checking have their advantages. Large media companies have many journalists who can verify stories and interview experts. Fact-checking organizations ensure that their information is accurate. Fact-checking organizations use strict procedures and guidelines to ensure their information is accurate. They verify the accuracy of information by consulting original sources, interviewing experts, and often considering multiple perspectives to provide a complete picture.
