Police also hold parents responsible.
A real joke doesn't hurt anyone. But if the joke becomes a crime, it is no longer fun for those affected. The next morning you don't just have to remove the toilet paper from the garden. They often suffer significant damage.
On the night of May 1st, young people in particular are out and about to make their infamous “mash jokes”. But what once seemed original and funny is now too boring for many people. Instead, the jokes turn into crimes and alcohol abuse increases.
- Last year, for example, unknown people threw paint bags against a house in Ehingen. In Berghülen, two cars were jacked up on logs. Someone in Merklingen smeared house walls with ketchup and green paint. In Ulm's city center, unknown people knocked over the plant troughs and decorative items in several shops. The Lonsee fire department went out around 1 a.m. to put out a burning old clothing container.
- A chainsaw woke up residents on the main street in Wiesensteig around 5:45 a.m. Unknown people had sawed down the maypole. In Göppingen, Ebersbach and Uhingen, the police had to reinstate manhole covers that had been dug out. Luckily no road users had hit or fallen into it. In and around Göppingen, some bent traffic signs also testified to the destructiveness instead of creativity of some “mashers”. A hedge burned on Bergstrasse around 1:30 a.m.
- On Spitalstrasse in Steinheim, an unknown person threw an object against the windshield of a moving car around 9:30 p.m. The driver was so frightened that she briefly lost control of the car. Fortunately, no further damage was caused. At the forest cemetery, unknown people pushed a box of grit onto the road. In Esslinger Weg, eggs flew against window panes and facades.
- A garden house burned on Hochstaad in Ummendorf around 11:15 p.m. Residents had previously heard firecrackers. A maypole was also sawn down on Dorfstrasse in Ingoldingen.
The police warn:
The night of May 1st is not an “exceptional day”. Especially not one that the police turn a blind eye to. On the contrary, the police will be on patrol more intensively that night. She will be present and carry out child protection and traffic checks. These are primarily intended to prevent young people from going overboard or drunk people from getting behind the wheel and endangering themselves and others. Those who cause damage expect penalties and demands for compensation.
Police ask parents and guardians to:
Explain to your children what is allowed and what is not. Show the consequences of wrong behavior. Do not give them any items that could lead to property damage. Encourage your children to stop their friends from committing criminal acts if necessary. According to the police, some dangerous situations and some damage that occurred last year could be prevented this May night:
The police wish everyone a good start to May without a rude awakening the following day.
