WhatsApp, the messaging app operated by Facebook, has become an integral part of our lives. With its free voice and video calling feature, WhatsApp has become the first choice for communication for many people. But is calling with WhatsApp really free, especially when you're abroad?
WhatsApp's basic features, including text messaging and calling, are free
WhatsApp's basic features, including text messaging and calls, are free - as long as you're connected to the internet. In contrast to conventional calls, which are billed by your mobile phone provider on a per-minute basis, WhatsApp uses the data from your internet tariff. If you have a flat rate, calls via WhatsApp are free.
But there is a catch when making calls with WhatsApp!
The actual cost of using WhatsApp may vary depending on the type of internet connection. Heavy use of calling and video calling features can quickly use up your monthly data allowance, especially if you don't have an unlimited data plan. In this case, the additional data connection costs can make the “free” WhatsApp calls an expensive affair.
WhatsApp itself writes that data usage fees may apply!
„Voice calling lets you call your contacts for free via WhatsApp, even if they are in another country. Voice calls use your phone's Internet connection, not your contract's voice minutes. Data usage charges may apply. „
Now comes the really tricky question: What happens if you use WhatsApp abroad?
Roaming charges may then apply. Even though WhatsApp itself doesn't charge for its services, your mobile or internet provider may charge you roaming fees for data connections abroad.
Some mobile operators offer flat rates for data roaming in certain countries. However, if you don't have such a package or are in a country that is not included in your package, the costs can quickly escalate. It is therefore always advisable to find out about your provider's roaming policy before traveling and, if necessary, look for alternatives such as local SIM cards or WiFi hotspots.
It must also be taken into account that a smartphone and internet access are required to use WhatsApp. These costs are not directly related to WhatsApp, but are a necessary requirement for using the service.
Conclusion
Calls via WhatsApp are not always as free as they seem at first glance. The actual cost depends on many factors, including your data plan, your location and the type of call. It is therefore advisable to be well informed and keep an eye on your data usage to avoid unexpected costs. Because as the old saying goes: Nothing is free - sometimes not even that.
