For 10 years, several videos have been circulating that are supposed to show how you can quickly make popcorn using four cell phones, using only their radiation.

The post has existed on Facebook since November 2017 , but is still widely shared and commented on:

You can watch one of the many videos here:

A look at the cell phones used in the video shows that the latest smartphones were not used here, because those videos actually appeared in 2008. The radiation from those cell phones when they ring is said to be so strong that they heat the corn contained in the water and the Turn kernels into popcorn.

Now we have a small, physical problem: It is not enough to heat the water alone; an object directly next to the grains or the air around the grains must also heat up, otherwise the grains will simply give off the heat into the air would; so nothing would happen.

The resolution

The videos are not a real demonstration of how strong cell phone radiation is, but rather clever viral marketing .
On May 28, 2008, the company “ cardo ” published the videos and disbanded them on June 13, 2008 , after the videos had already been seen by 4 million users. The website was constantly updated to show latest views

“More than 17 million people have seen our little videos since May 28, 2008 and we hope you had as much fun watching as we had creating them.”

The statement was finally taken offline in September 2008, but the videos still exist and are continually re-uploaded by users. You could also read a note under the original videos, which is of course missing from the newly uploaded videos:

“The content of the initial video is merely a fictitious and humorous optical illusion designed for entertainment. Nothing in the video implies that mobile phones can make popcorn.”

The content of that video is a fictional, optical illusion that only serves entertainment purposes. The company used the videos to advertise its Bluetooth headsets so that you no longer have to hold the supposedly dangerous cell phones to your ear, which are sure to make your brain boil.

“Maybe that’ll work after all?”

All physics speaks against this . First of all, ringing cell phones receive a signal, not emit it. The water in your body should already be boiling when your cell phone rings in your pocket. In addition, popcorn needs more than just a few seconds even in a microwave, so the alleged radiation from cell phones should literally burn you from the inside within a few seconds.

Conclusion

The videos are not real, but were a viral marketing stunt by a company to advertise their Bluetooth headsets. The company did not provide an exact explanation of how the videos were created. The most likely options are clever video editing or a hot plate mounted under the table (and either a lot of skill to make the cell phones ring just before they explode or post-production audio editing of the videos).
