The vehicle was traveling on the A70 from Bamberg in the direction of Bayreuth around midday when a patrol from the Bamberg traffic police wanted to subject the driver to a traffic stop. He did not respond to the stop signals or the police vehicle's horn. For some time the Tesla followed the police officers at a constant distance at 110 km/h. It turned out that the Tesla driver had his eyes closed and his hands not on the steering wheel. It was only after about a quarter of an hour that the man reacted and finally followed the officers' instructions.

Autopilot activated, fell asleep

The police assume that the driver let the autopilot of the electric vehicle take the wheel and fell asleep. During the following check he showed “drug-typical abnormalities”. The police also discovered a so-called steering weight in the footwell. This device is used to trick a vehicle's safety features by simulating the weight of hands on the steering wheel. After consultation with the public prosecutor's office, a report was filed for endangering road traffic. Until a court decision is made, the Tesla driver must forego his driver's license.
