Tangerines and citrus fruits are very popular in the cold season. Whether peeled or pressed into juice, many people eat the fruit from the south.
The topic “Poisonous tangerines and long-term damage” briefly summarized:
Sensitive websites report briefly about the great danger of tangerines. The explanation on this (topic of chlorpyrifos) is very short. This type of reporting is called alarmism and is out for clicks.
Tangerines are very popular with many people. Headlines that create a state of alarm about tangerines are all the more noticeable. Like the headline: “Toxic: Tangerines can cause long-term damage to the brain.”

Long-term damage to the brain, who wants that? So let’s take a closer look at what’s behind these headlines. Because at its core it's about the pesticide chlorpyrifos.
Tangerines affected!
According to recent findings, citrus fruits (as well as tangerines) often contain excessive residues of the pesticide chlorpyrifos. The insecticide is one of the most widely used pest control agents in the world and has now come into the focus of European authorities due to its potentially devastating side effects.
The use of chlorpyrifos can reportedly cause serious brain damage in children and animals. We have already discussed insect poison in our article “Chlorpyrifos – When the daily requirement of vitamin C is poisoned.” and there you can read:

The Süddeutsche Zeitung reports that in 2017, excessive residues of the insecticide chlorpyrifos were detected in every fourth mandarin and every third grapefruit and orange examined.
Even small amounts can have fatal effects. If babies come into contact with the poison in the womb, this can lead to damage to brain development as the poison attacks important areas of the cerebral cortex and causes them to shrink.

Alarmism
Things get exciting on social media when websites take up such a topic in a very abbreviated and alarmist manner and it's less about information than about clicks and attempted virality.
The tangerine counts less than the headline. Alarmism is a business model that goes beyond classic clickbait. Alarmism can be recognized by the following points:
- Dramaticness of ordinary things
- Permanent condition of superlatives
- Structure of the general state of concern
Therefore, you should always be careful: when it comes to alarmism, there is of course always the real reason. However, this is radicalized and presented as universal.
