On Tuesday afternoon, a 65-year-old from Neukirchen-Vluyn filed a complaint with the criminal police in Kamp-Lintfort.
After checking his bank statements from June, he and his wife were shocked to discover that a large amount of money had been withdrawn from the account.
What happened?
The man was on June 9th. (Thursday) around 12:00 p.m. at a bank on Kamperdickstrasse. There he wanted to withdraw the exact amount of money that was now missing from the machine. But after entering his PIN, he waited in vain for the money to be issued.
As he assumed it was probably a mistake, he thought nothing of it and tried to withdraw money from another bank in Krefeld with his wife. The machine spat out the amount entered without any problems, so the couple thought no harm and forgot the story in Kamp-Lintfort until they noticed the debits.
In the present case, there is a suspicion that fraudsters have manipulated the cash dispensing shaft in Kamp-Lintfort.
Since the crime took place almost over a month ago, it is questionable whether this can still be verified afterwards. This is now being checked by the criminal police, who have started the investigation.
This case of manipulation is relatively old.
However, since the cases could increase, the police give tips on how to behave:
- In so-called cash trapping, the cash dispensing slot at the ATM is manipulated with attached attachments in such a way that the banknotes are held back in the slot when withdrawn.
- Be aware of your surroundings before withdrawing money. Check the condition of the ATM and report any changes to the police immediately on 110!
- When entering your PIN, always make sure that no one is watching you; ask intrusive people to stay away.
- Cover the PIN entry by holding your hand or wallet over the keyboard as a privacy screen. This makes spying much more difficult!
- Never enter your PIN at door openers, not even at financial institutions. In such cases, contact the police immediately!
- If you don't get cash from the ATM, wait at the ATM! Call the police if the bank is closed at this time!
