Our partners at Watchlist Internet are warning of a new scam on Amazon that aims to lure victims away from the Amazon sales platform in order to then cheat them out of their money.

The case: Order from Amazon Marketplace seller

Sabine is looking for a coffee machine on Amazon. She finds a good deal at a marketplace retailer. She ordered and is now waiting for delivery. Shortly after the order was placed, the purchase was canceled by the retailer. She receives an email in which the dealer apologizes and tells her a shop where she can order the coffee machine for the same price. Be careful: this is a scam! Never complete Amazon orders outside of the platform.

How does the Amazon scam work?

  1. You order a product on Amazon.
  2. The order will be canceled immediately afterwards.
  3. You will receive an email from the seller. In it, the person apologizes for the cancellation and offers you the product for the same price in an “Amazon partner shop”.
  4. The seller will give you the internet address of the supposed “Amazon partner shop”. We are currently aware of the fake shop elektro-products-online.de. However, we assume that numerous fake Amazon partner shops exist.
  5. If you order you will lose your money and not receive a product.

Are there Amazon partner shops like elektro-products-online.de?

No, so-called “Amazon partner shops” are fraudulent. When you buy on Amazon, the order is always placed on Amazon and processed through the platform. If sellers try to lure you to external websites, it is a scam.

How does the fraudulent offer come about on Amazon?

We assume that the account of a legitimate trader was hijacked. Report such accounts to Amazon.

How to recognize fake shops

  • Price: If the price is cheaper than other online shops, you should be careful. It is most likely a lure offer.
  • Search experiences on the Internet: Search the shop on the Internet. Use search terms like “fake,” “experiences,” or “scam.” You may be warned not to order there.
  • Imprint: Check whether there is an imprint and whether important company information (company name, email address, address of the company headquarters, telephone number, VAT number, etc.) can be found there. Stay away if there is no or incomplete imprint.
  • Payment options: Be careful if you can only pay in advance via bank transfer. Also check which payment options are offered in the terms and conditions and whether they actually exist. If there is only credit card payment or bank transfer in advance, although PayPal and purchase on account are also advertised, the shop is fraudulent!

I ordered! What now?

  • Paid in advance by bank transfer? Contact your bank. Payment may be stopped or reversed. However, the chances of success are rather low.
  • Paid with a credit card? Watch out for unauthorized debits. The best thing to do is to contact your credit card company and explain that criminals know and may misuse your information.
  • Contact Amazon Customer Service: Describe your situation and the financial loss. Since the payment was not processed through Amazon, Amazon is not obligated to issue a refund. However, you may be able to agree on a goodwill solution.
  • Make a police report: Here you will find helpful information on how to make a report .
