The shelves in supermarkets could slowly be emptying when it comes to products from the US food giant Mars. Because in a discussion between manufacturers and supermarkets, they are now drawing conclusions, as the food newspaper reports. He stopped his deliveries to Rewe and Edeka, which also include the discounters Netto and Penny.

Price demands

This was preceded by debates about the food company's high price demands. The US company cited rising production costs and inflation as the reason for the price increases. Since the price increases were not accepted at the level presented, deliveries have now been stopped.

Rewe boss Lionel Souque criticizes the current situation in the food trade:

“Many people come and announce price increases of ten percent and say that Rewe should pass this on to the customers. That’s totally unrealistic.”

Edeka boss Markus Mosa also warned his suppliers against excessive price demands:

“Food must not become a luxury item.”

Austria's Rewe spokesman Paul Pöttschacher told the Salzburger Nachrichten that the prices of comparable products had not increased that much. Mars would also charge less for its products in other countries.

Some of the affected food markets are now relying on increased advertising of their own brands.

Complete range affected by Mars

It's not just sweet bars like Snickers, Bounty or Twix that are produced by the food company. Pet foods such as Pedigree, Sheba or Whiskas are also affected, as are Ben's rice or Wrigley's chewing gum. In total, the US group supplies retailers with more than 300 products.

However, the dispute over price increases is not an isolated case. There have been repeated debates with Mars over prices and delivery conditions in recent years.

Similar situation in Switzerland

Several products from the US food company Mars have already been removed from the range by the Coop retail chain. According to Coop, the group also wanted to implement “above-average price increases” here.
