Fraudsters are currently up to mischief again, pretending to be police officers to their victims.
Last Monday (December 2nd), an elderly couple received a call from a “fake police officer”. The male perpetrator with a foreign accent reported the arrest of two burglars in the neighborhood. Accomplices are still at large. In order to arrest the entire gang, the couple's help is required.
The caller asked the two seniors to collect a five-figure amount from their bank so that the money could be used as bait for the fleeing perpetrators. The bank was privy to the plan and would hand over fake banknotes for the purpose of handing over. The victims were also offered verification of the call by dialing the well-known police emergency number 110. In fact, the seniors received the information that everything was going well. But apparently the line to the fraudsters had not been interrupted beforehand.

After being asked by the fraudulent caller, the couple deposited the collected (but of course real) money at a parked car on Gagelweg, as agreed. Shortly afterwards, a person was seen taking the amount of money and then disappearing.
The police are looking for the “wrong police officers”
The woman is described by witnesses as being around 175 centimeters tall, of slim build and with blonde hair tied in a braid. She wore a baseball cap, a green Parker with fur trim on the collar, and faded blue jeans. The suspect and alleged accomplice of the previous caller quickly walked away with her prey towards Grüner Weg.
Shortly afterwards, the deceived couple had doubts and contacted the real police, so that the fraud was exposed. The real police officers initiated criminal proceedings. In addition to other leads, the investigating police are hoping for further witnesses who can provide information about the woman described. Anyone who has observed something is asked to contact the Criminal Investigation Department 12 on 02131 300-0 ( see here ).

The fake police officer scam is not new, but perpetrators always manage to get hold of unsuspecting people's savings or valuables. The fraudsters probably fail in 90 percent of cases because of the mistrust of those they call. However, the remaining 10 percent are lucrative enough to continue doing the reprehensible “business”. Protect yourself and your circle of relatives or acquaintances by informing them about the perfidious scam of the fake police officers and exchanging ideas. If you receive similarly dubious calls, contact the real police on the well-known telephone number 02131 300-0 or, in urgent cases, on the emergency number 110.
