The damage suffered by the victims is often enormous and ruinous - sometimes amounting to six-figure euro amounts. The police warn.

Investment fraud causes enormous damage

In September, a 64-year-old from Jülich was encouraged by a chat acquaintance to invest 260,000 euros in a trade platform. When she requested the return of deposits and winnings in November, this was refused. The unknown perpetrators said she should first transfer a tax to a digital account. It was only at this point that the 64-year-old became aware of the fraud and reported the investment fraud to the police.

A 44-year-old from Nörvenich also fell victim to fraud. In the period from the end of July to the beginning of October, he lost a total of 100,000 euros to a company that he had become aware of on social media. The company advertised that it would make profits from the economic crisis possible. After an initial payment of 249 euros, money was actually transferred back to him shortly afterwards. The man from Nörvenich was then offered the opportunity to make even more winnings. To do this you have to switch to your computer. The unknown perpetrators presumably spied out data - and then transferred money from the 44-year-old's account without permission.

A 67-year-old was also defrauded in Düren-Birkesdorf. He had online contact with a kfunk man who said he wanted to invest in cryptocurrency with him. He paid a total of 200,000 euros until he noticed the fraud and contacted the police.

Police appeal to the public

The police in the Düren district use investment fraud cases like these as an opportunity to warn and appeal to the population to thoroughly check websites before processing a transfer:

  • Checking the company headquarters or legal notice: If the company does not have a complete legal notice or registered office in Germany, you should be particularly careful and attentive when registering.
  • Checking the payee: If the payees are foreign accounts, caution is advised. Transactions abroad are difficult to reverse.
  • Checking reviews of the platform: Simple internet searches in search engines, forums, etc. offer a good starting point for getting a first impression of the relevant websites. Here too, the reviews do not necessarily have to be true.
  • Contact the bank in advance: Before making investments over the Internet, you should first contact your bank in order to obtain comprehensive information about the options and risks.

As soon as it is suspected that they have been the victim of a crime, the affected people should immediately contact the police and file a report. In addition, you should contact your house bank in order to possibly reverse payments that have already been made. You should no longer respond to follow-up reports (e.g. reminder letters from law firms).
